Literary Sovereignty: Reimagining Postcolonial Statehood in the Fiction of Gabriel García Márquez and Carlos Fuentes

. In the landscape of postcolonial Latin America, the concept of sovereignty has remained a contested and deeply problematic notion. This article argues that the literary narratives of Gabriel García Márquez and Carlos Fuentes are not passive reflections of sovereignty struggles but are, in fact, parallel sites of sovereignty-making. Through a critical analysis of One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967) and The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962), this study demonstrates how these authors use fiction to interrogate official state narratives and enact a form of cultural sovereignty. This concept refers to the power of a people to define their own identity, history, and values outside of the ideological frameworks imposed by colonial and neocolonial powers. Utilising theoretical frameworks from postcolonial theory (Said, Bhabha) and contemporary political philosophy (Agamben, Mbembe, Schmitt), the article contends that García Márquez frames sovereignty as a communal, generational project tragically undone by neocolonial forces, while Fuentes presents it as an individual, psychological burden corrupted by power. Ultimately, both authors reveal that literature itself becomes a sovereign act, creating a counter-archive that preserves suppressed histories and imagines a more authentic national identity beyond the failed postcolonial state.
